Eduard Azarian – President, Program Director & Boys Team Head Coach

  • Originally from the Soviet Union, Eduard comes from a tradition of excellence in the sport of gymnastics. Following in the footsteps of his father, the famous Albert Azarian, Eduard is a second generation World Champion & Olympic Gold Medal Winner.
    Eduard's credits include:

Marina Azarian - General Manager

Marina has over 17 years experience in gymnastics business management. From 1997-2005, Marina was the business office manager at a top Northern Orange County Gymnastics Academy. Prior to that, she served as the office assistant at a Los Angeles County Gymnastics Center. Marina has extensive experience in human resources, marketing material development, web site management, scheduling, as well as member communication and community relations. Marina is a graduate of Armenian State University, where she studied English, Armenian, Russian and German languages. Her credentials include teaching and translating.

Vanessa Gonzalez-Excel Program Director, Academy Director, Girls Team Coach, Office Personnel

Vanessa has been coaching gymnastics since 2002.  Following in her sisters foot steps she joined the sport at the age of 2 and has lived in it ever since.  She has coached preschool through girls competitive level 9 but focuses on the compulsory levels and excel.  She believes that instilling the right foundation in gymnastics is critical for future progress.  She has also spent the last few years assisting in the management of another major Orange County gym.  Her coaching philosophy is “You can only get out of this sport what you put into it.  That includes coaches!  You can’t expect your child to go out there and dominate unless you have embedded in her every single day the tools needed to achieve her goals!  Work your girls hard but work yourself harder, give them confidence and pride and demand perfection because if you don’t they wont strive for it!  They will surprise you with what they can achieve!” 


 

Albina Azarian-Myers – Office Manager & Special Events Coordinator

Albina has over ten years of working in the gymnastics office environment as an office manager, special events coordinator and an academy supervisor. Albina has grown up in the world of gymnastics and dance. She did gymnastics for five years and has danced for over nine years in Hip Hop and Jazz. Albina has coached gymnastics for Levels 1-5 including Pre Team and Competitive Team. She has also helped choreograph a routine for a North Orange County dance company that she was training and performing with. Currently, Albina is the office manager & special events coordinator at Azarian Gymnastics.


 

Perry Davies – Girls Team Head Coach

Perry is a former gymnast. He was the All Around Regional champion in 1986 and a National qualifier in 1987. Perry has seven years of coaching experience, working with both boys and girls teams, levels 5 - 10.   “To me there is no greater feeling than watching a child succeed.   My favorite motto is, "You have to show them how much you care, before they care how much you know"

 

Krassi Varbanova - Optional Girls Team Coach

Krassi is a talented coach and choreographer. She is multi-lingual, speaking English, Bulgarian, Russian, and Italian. Krassi started gymnastics at age 6, and by age 11 this prodigy was on Bulgaria's National Team. Her notable achievements include three Gold medals and one Silver at the 1976 Bulgarian National Championships. She competed at the 1978 World Championships in Stratsburg, France, and at the 1979 World Championships in Ft. Worth, Texas, which qualified Krassi to the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. While her Olympic dream did not come true (no appearance due to a serious knee injury), Krassi continued to represent Bulgaria's National Team in several international competitions until 1982.

 

Krassi is a former FIG International Judge brevet. She possesses a Masters Degree in Pedagogics and Sports Training. In 1983 she began work for Bularia's Gymnastics Federation Research Team, analyzing the performance of high-level gymnasts during training sessions, and designing a more effective skill and ability testing program. She later spent four years in Italy after a special invitation from the Italian Gymnastics Federation to work with their athletes. After several years of coaching National Team members in both Bulgaria and Italy, Krassi came to the U.S. in 1998. Since then, she has been coaching at different club in the US, including Charter Oak Gliders and Top Flight Gymnastics.

 

In 2002 Krassi was nominated for the Southern California Coach of the Year Award based on her outstanding coaching achievements.

Erika Purtell - Compulsory & Optional Girls Team Coach

 

Erika’s life passion is gymnastics. Born and raised in Long Beach she started her gymnastics career at the holding several state, regional and national titles on those events.  Erika worked as the optional beam and floor coach for one of the biggest gyms in Orange County, producing two level 10 state champions, one regional champion, national champions and five division I scholarships.  After she went on to establish and head coach the St. Joseph High School gymnastics team where they went to place 5th at CIF finals. Erika believes “in instilling every child with the right work ethic, motivation and technique to achieve gymnastics greatness.”


 

Ivan Nguyen - Girls Team Coach

Ivan began gymnastics at age 8 and began competing at age 10. Ivan competed at the compulsory and optional levels. He was a vault champion several years in a row, yet high bar was his favorite event to compete.  Due to an injury while in high school, Ivan was unable to further his gymnastics career after high school.

 

Ivan began coaching boys and girls in 1995, while still in high school. He has coached beginning level girls as well as elite level girls. His favorite event to coach is bars. Many of his gymnasts have competed at regional and national championships.

 

Ivan received an AA degree while attending Orange Coast College, as well as completing his A&P (Airframe &  Powerplant) certification. Ivan hopes to coach college level athletes in the future.


 

April Littlejohn – Academy & Excel Instructor

April has been coaching gymnastics for five years. She has been part of the Adult Gymnastics program for eight years. April believes in teaching the kids with a positive attitude and a smile. "I believe that the kids should have fun, be encouraged to learn new skills and to always try their best." 

 

Daniel Goglanian – Academy & Adult Program Instructor

Coach Daniel has been coaching gymnastics since 1992.  With a heart for kids and a desire to see them grow and develop, he enjoys teaching academy classes ranging from beginning boys through pre-team.

Daniel began gymnastics at age 14 and competed throughout high school. He now coaches because it gives him the chance to connect with kids one-on-one - and along with their parents and teachers - provide them with the skills necessary to do well in life.  “I try to create an encouraging environment in which each child can feel accepted, have fun, be challenged and do things they never thought they could!  Once a child understands that the disciplines gain them the freedom to do what they really love, they excel! It’s always a pleasure to see the boys move through the levels, build their confidence and develop into not just amazing athletes, but capable young men with the character and values to sustain their successes.”

Daniel enjoys working at Azarian U.S. Gymnastics Training Center because it is a family atmosphere with capable and caring coaches and staff!  And he always welcomes parents to inquire about their child’s progress.

Coach Daniel is CPR and Safety certified and also teaches an adult gymnastics class for those who’d like to condition or improve upon their current skills.  When he is not coaching, Daniel is a recruiter for an Arts College and works with the youth at his church.

 


 

Hope Litton – Academy Instructor

Hope has been coaching gymnastics for 4 years.  She is a former gymnast and went up to Level 7.  Hope enjoys coaching, watching students succeed, as well as helping to raise the children's self-esteem.

 

Kathryn Endo - Academy Instructor

Kathryn is pursuing a double major in dance and drama at UC Irvine, where she is also a member of the Campuswide Honors program. She is currently training in ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical, hip hop, and modern, and is thrilled to be dancing up to eight hours a day, six days a week. She loves working with kids, whether it be coaching dance or gymnastics, and has been teaching since the age of 15, when she became a certified Women's Self-Defense and martial arts instructor. For Kathryn, the most wonderful part of her job is getting to share her love for these arts with the children she coaches, and her philosophy is that, "A coach can ask for no more and no less than a student's best, and teaching a child to do their best in any activity is a great way to help them excel in life."

 

Michael Custodio - Boys Pre Team Instructor

Michael has been a member of Azarian Gymnastics Training Center since the age of three and joined the competitive team at the age of four. He was formerly a three-time member of the National Future Stars Team, a two time J.O. Nationals Qualifier, Region One Select Team Member, and Region One All Around Champion in 2004. Michael has currently moved on to coaching the Azarian Gymnastics Boys’ team along the side of his mentors Eduard Azarian and Tim Klempnauer. He believes that gymnastics raises an individuals self esteem and the sport produces young athletic individuals who are capable of reaching any goal they desire to pursue.


 

Michelle Sprott - Tiny Tumblers, Super Tots & Little Champions Instructor

Michelle participated in formal gymnastics as a youth from age 5 through 18 and assisted in coaching younger students during that time.  Michelle has a degree in elementary education and taught for several years in the K-2 age group.  After staying home with her two children when they were young Michelle taught tumbling, physical education and pre-school related classes to children ages 5 months to 9 years at a children’s gym for 3 years prior to joining Azarian.  Michelle brings over 20 years of experience teaching and coaching young children.  Michelle enjoys helping the children at Azarian reach their goals and succeed in a positive, fun and rewarding atmosphere.

 


 

Andrea Cantrell - Super Tots, Little Champions & Academy Instructor

Andrea has been coaching gymnastics since 2004. She was involved in cheerleading throughout her elementary years. She continued cheerleading in middle school, as well as Drill Team. Once entering High School she began tumbling for High School Cheer. While in high school, Andrea also was involved in many sports; soccer, track and softball. After graduating, Andrea began coaching gymnastics. Andrea has coached gymnastics for levels 1-4. Andrea is CPR and safety certified. She currently attends Santiago Canyon College and Santa Ana College. Andrea is currently on the women’s Track & Field Team, where she holds the college record for the woman’s 4x100 Relay Race Team. Her coaching philosophy is “teach with all your might, love with all your heart and laugh until you just can’t stop.” Andrea’s favorite quote that she loves telling her students when they are down, “You begin to achieve when you begin to believe!” She believes it’s 100% true!


 

Toby Lewis-Academy Instructor

Toby first became involved in gymnastics as a young child and has participated in athletics ever since. Toby has been coaching at Azarian Gymnastics since early 2010. He has a passion for working with young gymnasts and watch them rise to the challenge of learning new and difficult skills.Most importantly coach Toby believes that gymnastics is an excellent and FUN way to build the foundation for an active and healthy lifestyle.

 

Brice Myers-Team, Pre Team, Academy Instructor & Graphic Designer

Brice competed under the coaching of Eduard Azarian for 8 years. After finishing gymnastics, Brice coached recreation levels for three years before going to school at Azusa Pacific University to complete a double major in Graphic Design and Marketing. He now works at Azarian Gymnastics by combining the two things he does best: Graphic Design and Gymnastics. Brice coaches in the Azarian preschool program as well as in the recreation program, but spends most of his time coaching level 4 and 5 team girls.

 

Andrea Sconberg-Little Champions & Academy Instructor

Andrea has been involved in gymnastics all her life.  She started in the Parent N Me classes with her twin sister when she was just an infant.  Andrea eventually worked her way up to the team level, competing nationally as a competitive level 10 gymnast. Andrea still remains active training and competing in Triathlons all over the state.  Andrea graduated from UCI last year with a BS in Biological Science and is hoping to pursue a career in pediatrics.  Andrea loves working with children, watching them enhance their skills and practice the sport she grew up in.


 

Melody Bader-Little Champions & Academy Instructor

Melody started gymnastics at the age of 6. She pursued her passion in tumbling for years to follow. She also has been dancing to various types of genres from the age of 4 including ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, etc. through graduating high school. Melody is currently in school and working towards a degree in law where she can pursue her dream of becoming a sports agent. On her off time, Melody enjoys playing ice hockey on a local co-ed adult league. Melody loves helping children realize the greatness of achievement through setting short term goals and determination in a fun, enthusiastic, caring and understanding way. She also believes that if the coaches are having fun doing their job and make it a fun environment, the excitement shows in their kids!

 

Stefanie Williams-Goldberg-Little Champions Instructor

Stefanie started gymnastics at age 5 and competed in high school. She has a B.S in Marketing as well as background in Real Estate.  Stefanie finds great joy teaching gymnastics and loves working with children.  Her favorite part of coaching is watching the kids learn new skills and gain the confidence needed to progress in the sport. " I believe that gymnastics helps kids learn "life skills" that can be applied at home and at school."

Jessica Evans - Little Champions Instructor

Jessica has been practicing gymnastics since the age of five. She continued with gymnastics, cheerleading, and dance until she graduated from high school. Once she entered high school Jessica was on the Aliso Niguel pep sqaud and also on an All Star National Competition Cheerleading team. Her senior year she was on a Senior Co-ed team that won first place at every competiton and went on to win Nationals. Before working here at Azarian Gymnastics Jessica was a Preschool Teacher. She is a fully qualified Preschool Teacher with all 12 Early Child Education units including, Child Family and Community, Infant/Toddler Development and Care, Curriculum Theory Methods, and Materials, and Child Growth and Development. Jessica was a lead teacher in the infant room for a majority of the time but also worked in every other age group from six weeks old to thirteen years old.
 

 

Kirsten Esselman - Little Champions Instructor

Kirsten began gymnastics at age 3. She started competing at age 7 and competed with her gymnastics club in Canada until age 18. Then she received a gymnastics scholarship to Brigham University, where she competed for four years and obtained her BA in education. Kirsten taught 4th and 5th grade in Utah for four years before moving to California. She is currently a California credentialed educator who now spends part of her time working with autustic students. Kirsten loves kids of all ages and loves to be in the gym. Her favorite part about teaching preschool gymnastics is when her gymnasts tell her funny stories while stretching and when they have beaming smiles because they accomplished something new. Her goal is to help all her students love learning.

Mark Lohde - Academy Instructor

People ask Mark: “When did you start gymnastics?”, and Mark has a hard time answering it. The problem is he literally took his first steps in a gym! Growing up with a sister already in the sport, Mark grew up to be a competitive gymnast as well. When Mark joined USGTC with Coach Tim Klempnauer at age 6, he was the youngest kid on team, nicknamed “Peanut”! Mark competed 7 years for USGTC & Azarian Gymnastics in competitive artistic gymnastics, and continued on for 2 years of competitive trampoline and tumbling. In the end, Mark finished 5th in the Nation on Tumbling in 2010. Mark believes that gymnastics can give a child, the “Life Skills” necessary to achieve anything they desire in life! It truly builds the foundation for everything in life. Skills like: goal setting, determination, perseverance and time management! Mark wants to give back these abilities to any child interested. He loves to see the progression of a child’s skill level, confidence and attitude. Personally gymnastics has served as a very strong foundation for Mark’s future life. Mark is currently a proud member of the Aliso Niguel High School Surf Team and has started his own business with action photography as well. Mark truly believes that gymnastics is the basis for anything a person would want out of life!


 

Oscar Luna - Academy Instructor

Oscar is CPR certified and has been a certified massage therapist for 6 yrs. Starting in junior high he was a cheerleader for 9 years and was hired right out off high school by UCA (Universal Cheerleaders Association) as an instructor teaching stunts, tumbling, and cheering. He began coaching Gymnastics in 2003. Oscar  has run summer programs and coached classes from ages 5 to 16, as well as heading the cheer program and coaching the adult class. He believes gymnastics is a great foundation for all sports.

 


 

Alex Monda - Academy Instructor

Growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, Alex has been competing in gymnastics since he was in the fourth grade. After trying many different sports, his passion for gymnastics was immediate. In 2009 when his family relocated to SoCal, he joined Azarian. Under Eduard and Tim’s guidance,he won level 7 rings at state in 2010, and Level 9 highbar at regionals in 2011. Alex has always had a passion for the rings and enjoys both teaching and performing rings. He most enjoys seeing the smiles on a children's faces when they’re learning and having fun in the gym. Alex believes that the coordination a child develops in gymnastics is an incredible skill for any child to have. He is currently a student at Santa Margarita Catholic High School and a Level 10 team member.

 


 

Trevor Myers - Office Assistant

Trevor grew up in his Aunt's day care and has since gone back and volunteered many times with the children at the daycare. One of his favorite things to do is spend time with animals. Trevor worked at a few animal hospitals and has spent about 6 years training dogs of all breeds in the Newport Beach and Costa Mesa areas. Trevor was a competitive swimmer and continued the sport throughout high school and college. Trevor has also spent two years coaching swimming and water polo for the 10-13 year old age groups. He truly loves being a part of gymnastics world because his brother was a gymnast and Trevor got to love and admire the sport. Currently Trevor works in the front office and assists on all special events at the gym. In his free time, Trevor enjoys spending time with his wife Albina and thier animals. 

 

Betsy Bryntesen - Little Champion & Academy Instructor

Betsy grew up doing tumbling and cheerleading. She won Idaho state all around in high school competitive cheerleading all 4 years. Betsy coached gymnastics and cheer tumbling for over 4 years. She studied kinesiology with her hope to get her athletic training certificate.  "I love the challenge of explaining gymnastics and life skills through a child's eye. It is very important to me to keep the passion of the sport going. I believe in hard work, in a fun way! "

 

Kayla Kremer - Academy Instructor

Kayla started gymnastics at Azarian Gymnastics Training Center when she was 8 years old. She participated in competitive gymnastics for six years and later became a tumbler for an All Star Competitive Cheer Squad after her gymnastics career ended. Kayla believes that the sport of gymnastics not only teaches incredible physical skills but also teaches kids valuable life lessons that will stay with them the rest of their lives. She mostly coaches Azarian's girls' pre-team and excel classes.

Gayle Kaminsky - Academy, Excel & Pre Team Instructor

Gayle has been coaching gymnastics since 2000. In New York. She instructed in the recreational program, plus organized and coached the pre-team, level 4, 5, and 6 competitive teams.  Gayle has attended regional congress training in New York.  She spent several years as a coach at Woodward Gymnastics Camp in Pa.  At Woodward Gayle attended educational spotting clinics led by college coaches, where she learned new drills and spotting techniques. She is a strong believer in positive reinforcement, being consistent, behaving as a mentor and encouraging laughter.  Gayle has a masters in Psychology, focusing in child development.  She is a certified school psychologist and is working on her Marriage and Family Therapy license. Gayle focuses on children's individual strengths and encourages them to grow in areas of weakness.  Her favorite part of being a coach is watching a gymnast achieve what he/she thought was impossible.
